Geneva; Robert L. Peters, age 89 of Geneva passed away on Saturday January 6, 2018 at Geneva General Hospital.

Family and friends may call on Wednesday (Jan. 10) from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the McGuigan & Bero Funeral Home 45 High St. Geneva. Members of the Geneva Council #272 Knights of Columbus will meet at 6:30 p.m. and members of Winnek Post 396 American Legion and V.F.W. Post 2670 will meet at 6:45 p.m. at the funeral home for services. Bishop John E. McCafferty Assembly 4th Degree of Knights of Columbus will hold an honor guard from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday (Jan. 11) with prayers at 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home and a Mass of Christian Burial at 3:00 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church. Spring burial will be in Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Peace Parish, St. Francis-St. Stephen School Education Fund, Nester Hose Company of the Geneva Fire Department or the Ontario County Humane Society.

Bob was born on December 18, 1928 in Clifton Springs, NY the son of the late Leonard and Olga Johnson Peters. He grew up in Shortsville and graduated from Shortsville High School. Bob was a proud U.S. Army Veteran serving in the 11th Airborne Glider Squadron during WWII in Occupied Japan.

Bob married Mary Ann Doody on August 6, 1949. He was a graduate of Willard State Hospital School of Nursing and St. Mary’s Hospital School of Anesthesia in Waterbury, Ct. Bob retired from Willard State Hospital and also worked many years at Newark State School, Clifton Springs Hospital and in later years as a Psychiatric Nurse at Clifton. Bob also served as a Supervisor for the City of Geneva on the Ontario County Board of Supervisors.

Life member of Geneva Council #272 Knights of Columbus, Bishop John E. McCafferty Assembly 4th Degree of Knights of Columbus. He served as Grand Knight, District Deputy, State Chairperson of Religious Vocations and had the distinction of being named a N.Y.S Knight of the year. Bob became involved in cooking under the tutelage of Master Chef Andy Telerico along with Barney Doran & crew putting out the best dishes in the Finger Lakes.

In 2015 along with lifetime friend Joe LaVoie, was honored at the 4th Degree Exemplification. The highlight was him confirming Knighthood on his namesake & grandson Robert L. Peters, II.

He was a member of Our Lady of Peace Parish with a deep devotion to Padre Pio, Winnek post 396 American Legion, Geneva V.F.W. post 2670.

Most of all he cherished his wife and family. He loved taking his grand kids to Yankee games, swimming and other activities. Bob was an avid gardener who loved his tulips and enjoyed giving coaching advice at DeSales games while his grandsons were playing.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years Mary Ann; children, Michael (Mary Jo) Peters of Punta Gorda Isles, FL, John (Joan) Peters of Geneva, Teresa (Anthony) Cupelli of Geneva, Kathleen Doody of Rochester, Marianne (Bruce) Williamson of Charlottesville, VA/Rochester, Timothy Peters of Geneva, Margaret Peters of Geneva, Matthew Peters of Geneva and Mary Doris (Steve) Diehl of Pittsford; 23 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 1 step great grandchild; sisters, Shirley (Ben) D’Arduini, Betty (Gary) Pappert; sister-in-law, Ruth Peters; sister-in-law, Alice Appleton; brother-in-law, John (Norma) Doody; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bob was predeceased by his parents; son, Dennis Peters; brother Howard (Bud) Peters; sisters, Catherine McCullum, Alice French; brother-in-law, Oliver (Pudge) Appleton; beloved dogs, especially Ginzy & Heidi and a host of friends, especially Bill Foster and George Doeblin.
