He never took a straight line in life. He completed his basic training at the Sampson Air Force Base in Romulus and served 4 years overseas in Germany. Upon returning home, he became a Police Officer for the Bedford Police Dept. After leaving the police department, he worked in sales for various corporations. Richard eventually became an Abstractor Title Insurance Examiner owning and operating Cooper Abstract Company for over 30 years retiring in 2014.

Richard was a member of the Winnek Post 396 American Legion and served on the steering committee for the formation of Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery. He had a love for sailing, reading, growing garlic, and spending time with his family. His sailboat was named “Lost Chords” and he sailed it out of Sampson State Park.
