“Smitty" was born in Geneva on July 10, 1927 the son of the late Darwin and Hazel (Bryan) Smith. He served in the United States Navy at the age of 16 during World War II where he was a gunner on a Merchant Marine Ship and at one time he was stationed in Shanghai China. It was his great honor and privilege to be on board one of the first ships to sail home under the Golden Gate Bridge to San Francisco with survivors of the Bataan Death March. They were met by a blimp, sea planes, airplanes, boats of all sizes, whistles, horns and sirens. Fire boats were spewing huge fans of water. He never lost this memory. He was a life member of the VFW Post 2670 and the Winnek Post 396 American Legion.

After returning home from the Navy, he married the love of his life and raised two daughters. He worked at L.S. Lee & Sons where he served as the Master Mechanic for 30 plus years retiring in 1989.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church since he was a child where he sang in the youth choir and served as an acolyte for many years.

“ Smitty” had a zest for life and was loved by everyone who ever met him. His death leaves a heartache no one can heal, his love leaves a memory no one can steal.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Virginia (Allen), and they would have celebrated their 68th anniversary on May 29th; his children, Gail (Daniel) Tompkins and Deborah Smith of Geneva; grandchildren, Tonia (Marc) Tanguay of California, Heather (Chelsey Madia) Tompkins of Penn Yan, Necia (Manslank) Bray and Holly Manslank of Geneva, Lindsay (Daniel) Hamilton of Palmyra, Morgan Fryer and Adam Fryer of Geneva; great-grandchildren, Madison and Ryan Tanguay of California, Allyra Bray of Florida and Camaran Bray of Geneva, Ina (Tompkins) Madia of Penn Yan and Gavin George of Geneva; sister, Darwina Michaels of Avon; several nieces and nephews.
