Obituary for Iwan "John" Malyj

GENEVA- Iwan (John) Malyj, 88, died peacefully on October 13, 2018 at Strong Memorial Hospital with his family by his side.

Friends and family may call from 4:00 -7:00 pm on Wednesday (October 17) at the McGuigan and Bero Funeral Home 45 High Street, Geneva. The ARK Masonic Lodge #33 will hold a Masonic Service 4:15 pm and a prayer service officiated by Very Reverend Gregory Murphy at 6:45 pm at the funeral home. A panakhyda will be held on Thursday (October 18) from 5:00-6:30 pm followed by a funeral on Friday (October 19) at 10 am both will be officiated by Very Reverend Mykola Andrushkiv at St Luke’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church 3290 Warners Road, Warners NY.

John's was born in Mariupol, Ukraine on June 24, 1930 to the late Charles and Anna
(Bonderenko) Malyj. After many years of turmoil and displacement during and after the second world war, John with his parents and siblings (Helen, Olga, and Dmytro) were able to make their way to the United States. He arrived in Geneva New York in January of 1951.

John truly lived the American dream. He always valued his citizenship. His first job was as an auto mechanic at Russel Specht Chevrolet. He continued to gain experience, eventually as a service manager at Hallman Chevrolet followed by Mac Merritt Chevrolet. Then John’s entrepreneurial spirit took hold where he first established Malyj Poultry Farms and Malyj Auto Service with his brother Dmytro (Jim). In 1975 the brothers together opened Geneva Harley Davidson.

In September of 1963, John married Olga Krawec and remained with her for his entire life. They were married for 55 years. Together they had 2 children, daughter Kathy and son Peter. John and Olga lived a rich life and were devoted to family and their community. He continued to expand and improve upon the Malyj businesses.

John was also drawn to service. In 1982 he was elected as the Supervisor of the Town of
Seneca a position he held for 15 years. John was committed to many things as a town official He was passionately committed to improving the health and well being of the people in his township. John was always very proud of his accomplishments as Town Supervisor.

People who knew him would describe John as being kind, generous and good hearted. He had an infectious smile, a great sense of humor and was a particular connoisseur of fine single malt scotch. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his best friends Paul and Ethel Peters.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter Katia (Kathy) Prelack, son-in-law David
Prelack, 3 grandchildren, Anna, Nina, Nikolas, nephews Jim (Kathy Mastellar) and Alan (Anna) Malyj, his sister Olga Zinchenko as well as many special nieces and nephews whom he cherished.

He is predeceased by his son Peter, brother Jim, sister Helen, and sister-in law Rebecca. His family will be forever grateful for his hard work and the sacrifices he made for them. He will be truly missed.
