Geneva – Ione Quinker Wellington, Age 93, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, November 28th, 2014, at the Serenity assisted living home in Flint, MI, after surviving years of dementia, lymphocytic leukemia, and most recently cancer. Right to the end, she retained her sweet southern charm which had always endeared her to many new family & friends in Michigan these past 5 years.

Calling hours are 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 pm this Monday (Dec. 8) at the McGuigan & Bero Funeral Home 45 High St. Geneva. Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday (Dec. 9) at the Presbyterian Church on 24 Park Place in Geneva. Rev. Dr. Deborah Lind-Schmitz will officiate. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Church of Geneva or the American Cancer Society.

Ione was born in Valdosta, GA, on November 2nd, 1921, the daughter of Edwin Quinker and Alva Mann. She graduated from Valdosta High School, and from 1938-40, attended Georgia State Women’s College (later Valdosta State University) majoring in Education and minoring in Art. Ione opened a private kindergarten in Valdosta, and later with WWII, worked at the Parachute Dept. of the newly built Moody Air Force Base in GA. In 1942, Ione relocated to Madison, WI, where she taught at the War Nurseries, the 2nd grade, and kindergarten. In 1950, she relocated to upstate NY where she taught kindergarten at Phelps & Geneva. In 1957, Ione met and married John Wellington, and had 3 sons. In June 2007, they celebrated their 50th Golden Anniversary. Ione worked to found the NYS Conservative Party, was active in Geneva school education initiatives & PTA, and served in the Geneva Women’s Club. Ione & John were both 50 year members of the Presbyterian Church of Geneva, and Geneva Country Club.

Surviving Ione is her son John C. Wellington, Jr. and his wife, Suzanne of Grand Blanc, Michigan, and 6 grandchildren, Jason (Amber), Mallory (Tim), Hillary (Jacob), John III, Christine (Nathan) & Joshua, and 4 great grandchildren, Ryan, Jayna, Patrick, and Dakota Rose. Ione was also survived by her second son Richard E. Wellington, and grandson Richy.

Ione is further survived by her sister Miriam Brown still living in California at the age of 95 years old, and nieces and nephews.

Ione was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Wellington, Sr. and their son, Joseph C. Wellington.
