Robert J. “Uppy” Updike
Geneva; Robert J. “Uppy” Updike, age 89 of Garden St. passed away on Thursday January 2, 2014 surrounded by his family.
Family and friends may call from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 5) at the McGuigan & Bero Funeral Home 45 High St. Geneva. Funeral services will follow calling hours at 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. W. James Gerling will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions may be made to Ontario-Yates Hospice 756 Pre Emption Road Geneva, NY 14456.
Bob was born on July 4, 1924 in Geneva the son of the late Floyd and Mary Kelly Updike. He attended DeSales High School and served in the US Air Force during WWII and the Korean War. Bob retired after a 36 year career with NYSEG as a Chief Lineman. He volunteered to coach the Bears in the Geneva Junior Football League for many years and was a volunteer bus driver for DeSales High School Athletic Programs for over 30 years. Bob faithfully attended DeSales home games, even after retiring from bus driving. He was an avid bowler playing in several leagues and enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. He was also a member of the American Legion Winnek Post 396, the Geneva Rod and Gun Club, and the IBEW Local 249.
He is survived by his wife, Helen (Honey) Reid Updike, of 61 years; children, Marilyn Updike of Illinois, Kathleen McCusker of Geneva, Sue (Todd) Taylor of Geneva and Michael (Lisa) Updike of Geneva; grandchildren, Keith (Vanessa Diaz) Hofer, Nathan (Ashley) Hofer, Stephen Hofer, Amy (Jamie) McCusker Chelenza, Matthew (Victoria) McCusker, Chad (Rosy) McCusker, Sarah Updike, Brittany (Chris Cooley) Taylor, Shelby (Jamie Blancas) Taylor, Shannon (Sergej Borowik) Taylor; great-grandsons, Lucas and Andrew Hofer, Caiden Chelenza and Brendan McCusker; sisters, Florence Woods, Doris Hendricks, Margaret Thompson, and Sandy (Tony) Prete; brothers, Bernie (Rosemary) Updike and Donald (Kay) Updike; sister-in-law, Mary Jane Shaw; many nieces and nephews.
Bob was predeceased by brother, Paul Updike; sister, Jane DeWall; son-in-law, Timothy McCusker.
